Course program

The aim of the course is to increase the professional competence of students in the field of interpretation, the study of theoretical approaches to translation, translation schemes, ethics, communication aspects of interpretation, training and learning methods, basic professional vocabulary, interpreter psychology and stressors.

 

The course covers the following topics:

- the general theory of translation (transformations, equivalence, basic approaches, intermediate translation models);

- features and difficulties of interpretation taking into account the specifics of modern communication (fast pace of speech, new metaphors, general democratization of language, professional slang);

- linguistic aspects of interpretation (transformational and denotative principles, the role of background knowledge, the predominance of standard equivalents, limited context); psychophysiology of interpretation (stress factors, relaxation methods, "role model" of an interpreter);

- methods and ways of professional interpretation (text compression, paraphrases, generalization, omission, use of ready-made clichés);

- translation difficulties and barriers - fast speech rate, the incorrect pronunciation of the speaker, precise vocabulary (numerals, geographical and proper names), semantically incomplete statements;

- typical mistakes of the translator - omissions, semantic and stylistic incoherence, delays, attempts to pick up the pace of the speaker);

- specifics of the English-Russian / Ukrainian language pair;

- the role of context; compensation methods.
